Chapter Six

“We are not criminals,” said Green Cloak in a short, annoyed snap. “Did you get hurt?” She looked past me towards Brown Cloak. We approached the horses that had escaped the skirmish and now lingered at the end of the path.

“Just a scratch.” Brown Cloak looked down at her bloodied knuckles, only a few scrapes. She reached up and stroked her horse’s neck. “Why did you not use the dirk? What good did you think you could do with sgian dubh? The dirk would have given you a few more inches to take out his heart.”

“Aye. I could not get it out of my pocket,” said Green Cloak as she patted her hip to confirm it was still by her side. “Caught on the fabric.”

“Why are you carrying knives in your pocket?” I chimed in, very confused. It was not just them storing knives in their pockets. The entire morning left me confused.

“No one asked you, Sassenach,” Brown Cloak snarled at me. My eyes widen and mouth dropped open, like I tried to catch flies.

Green Cloak tilted her head and looked at me with sympathy and turned to her friend. “Anna, please. She did help.” She reached for her horse’s reins and soothed the light grey-haired horse.

“Really, Elizabeth? She got in the way when I was about to plant a fist into that rat’s jaw.” Anna planted a fist into her hip and shook her head at me. “You should tie the sgian dubh to your leg or some place to get to it easier.”

“I’m sorry. I thought I could help.” My face flushed with anger and embarrassment. I had only tried to help the two young women, and Anna was determined to let me know my help was neither needed nor wanted. “Yeah, sorry, again. You might want to call the police on those two guys.” I turned to walk back in the direction we had just come from. I had no clue where I was headed, but seeing the two men regain their footing, I decided I wouldn’t be caught alone with them.

“Oh, don’t listen to Anna,” Elizabeth said as she checked the saddlebags on her horse. She pulled out a length of ribbon. “We are trying to get to the port and did not need the delay those men caused.”

“I’m just trying to find my way back to my flat. I’m completely lost. Nothing looks familiar.” The street, buildings, and people were unfamiliar. “I’m Amelia, by the way.” I looked towards Anna. “Again, sorry about getting in the way of your mean right hook. It knocked the wind out of me.” I let out a chortle. I looked back towards the men. They limped in our direction. “Oh, and if you two are not acquainted with Crooked Nose and Clothes-Too-Tight, it looks like they are determined to have another meeting with you.” I flicked my head in the men’s direction.

“We need to go,” Elizabeth said as she slid the ribbon along with the small knife into her pocket.
